Windows 7 has a great sleep mode

Just a quick blurb to say that I have had my laptop in sleep mode for 8 days. Battery was STILL at 89% when I turned it on today. If this was Vista, it would have died in 2 days maximum.

Hopefully Microsoft keeps up the good work.

What is Drupal?

Drupal

I got a weekly email udpate from one of my Linkedin groups about free courses  for Linux, SQL, etc. being held at local clubs here in Austin.  That is exciting all by itself.

However, the most interesting part to me is this thing called Drupal that they are talking about.  I never even heard of the name before.  According to the site it is an open source content management system.  What does that mean?  I’m really not sure but further reading leads me to believe it is a system that you can use to create a website with databases.

It talks about using community modules and being able to create your own modules to create an dynamic site.

Like I need anymore stuff to learn. :)   I have several sites that I need to design and create.  I guess this is a good time to dip my toe into this and see how it works.

Tips and Tricks to help a slow computer

First off, virtually every tool that you will need to keep your computer running smoothly is already in Windows ore can be found on the Internet for free.

Here are a few things a person should check on a regular basis:

Here are two items to keep in mind:

  1. Not all antivirus programs really are antivirus.  Many of them will infect your computer instead.
  2. System cleanup programs are not created equal.  In fact, most delete simple little files called ‘cookies’ and tell you that your computer is running fine.
  3. It’s always important to do your research before buying or downloading any programs.

And now for the list…

  1. System Defragmentation (defrag) – Depending on how much adding and deleting of files you do on your computer will determine the frequency of how often you should run a defrag.
  2. Examples
    1. My work computer is defraged once every 3 months because I am only adding and deleting small files
    2. My home computer, where I do lots of streaming, huge movies, etc. is defragged once a week.
  3. I would recommend you do it once a week and you can setup your computer to run it automatically at the same time each week.
  4. Do not run it once a day.  It will shorten the life of the hard drive from all the writing and rewriting it does.
  5. I’d recommend saving this to your hard drive and running this defrag instead of the Windows XP version. It does a better job.  I have recommended JKDefrag in the past.
  6. Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – System Cleanup
    1. This should be ran once a month or whenever it starts to feel sluggish.
    2. After awhile, it will bring up a list of file types and ask you if you want to cleanup any of them.  You can put checkmarks in front of all the files except Office install files.  It’s good to keep those there.  The key to the system cleanup isn’t the deletion of the temp files, it is the compacting of the older files.
  7. Make sure Windows Update and automatic updates are turned on.  It is important to keep everything up to date.  (start -programs – windows update)

That’s it!  The only other suggestions is to make sure you have 2 gigs of Ram (4 is overkill and can’t even be used by 32 bit Windows.)

Time Warner booting people in Austin, TX with Invisible Caps

How does one of the largest cable companies in America hire such awful public relations people?  I am just floored that Time Warner has gone on this quest to make themselves seem even more evil.  Apparently Time Warner has decided that downloading 44GB in a week is illegal and has begun to disconnect users in Austin,TX.  You can read more info at DSLReports.com.  Fortunately, we have AT&T and Grande to choose from.  I’ll be moving soon and when I do, Time Warner will be out a three-digit monthly bill from me.

Devotec Solar Power Charger Review

I learned of the Devotec Solar Power Charger from a post on the popular blog Engadget and on The Boy Genius Report.

My picture taking skills need some brushing up so I would suggest checking out the pictures at The Boy Genius Report.  It does a great job of showing the size of the charger compared to a blackberry and an Iphone.

For the record, it is narrower than a cell phone (half the width) and is thinner or the same heighth as a blackberry.  It charges via sunlight or unnateral light.  The instructions state it should take 24 hours to charge.  Fortunately, I was able to charge my cellphone after only charging it for an hour.

My favorite thing about the charger is the ability to charge my ipod and my cell phone  with it.  This will significantly cut down on the cords I need to take when I travel along with having to find a plugin for my electronics.  (I’m looking at you O’Hare!)

Devotec is based in England and with the exchange rate I paid $50.  It came with several phone adapter plugs and a outlet converter so that you can plug it into a wall outlet anywhere in the world for a fast charge.

I believe small little solar charges like these are the future.  While whole roofs of solar panels are still not cost efficient without subsidies, small and efficient devices that are solar or run on kinetic energy can be made cost efficient.

Outlook Webmail Tip

Just helped someone out who had issues with his Outlook webmail and Windows Vista. When he went to reply to a message, it just gave him a red x everywhere.

It just requires a quick fix. When you login next time go to Options and then click on Email Security. From there, click download. This will download an update to allow everything to work.
