Vista Guardian causing troubles

Well, I guess we have another virus pretending to be an anti-virus.  My brother got his with this one.  It sounds identical to Antivirus 2009 but it goes by Vista Guardian instead.  Fortunately my pal malwarebytes still works on it.

Ipad looks cool but Apple is Missing some items

I like what I see with this Ipad but I don’t like two things right away.

1. It uses a micro SIM card – which from twitter no one seems to know anything about. The primary concern here is I can’t just pop in my existing SIM card from my AT&T phone.
2. No external Micro SD card slot. This should be mandatory and would help with transferring files between computers in a pinch. Of course all the memory is built in and that means more money in Apple’s pockets.

It is still interesting and priced better than I expected.

I am now a “favorite place” in Google! Got a QR Sticker

Yes, that is right, I received a letter and a sticker with a QR code for PCPrime!

It suprised me. That’s for sure. I found this article here that says 100,000 businesses chosen.   Never thought I had any chance of getting that.  PCPrime is quite small at this time.

So I tried to find a barcode reader for it.  Not having much luck for my BlackBerry 9700.  The built in QR Code reader in the blackberry messenger is the best but still doesn’t do Google Favorite Places QR Codes properly.  Still, without a storefront we decided to put in on the fridge.  Just another step in the right direction.

Follow up on how bad Prism Pointe is..Don’t buy Gateway

http://www.ripoffreport.com/computer-fraud/prism-pointe-technol/prism-pointe-technologies-does-9ecac.htm

We performed work for Gateway through Prism Point Technologies at the end of May 2008. Their customer was delighted with the work we performed. Of the five companies sent to resolve the client’s problem, we were the only ones to resolve it. We followed up the following Monday and Tuesday to ensure that all was going well and everything was working great. They were delighted!

Our company submitted all of the paperwork per Prism Point Technologies directions and waited for payment. In June we contacted Prism Pointe to inquire about our payment. They said they did not receive our FAX, so we re-FAXd the paperwork.

We waited another two weeks, contacted Prism Point again and talked to Laura. She said that she had gotten the paperwork and would be cutting a check before the end of the month. Three weeks later, no payment.

We contacted Prism Point at the beginning of August 2008, we were dumped into the Accounts Payable voice mail, no response after two days, called back, voice mail again, no reply.

Called back the following week, Laura’s voice mail was full and we cannot leave a voice mail. We ask for her supervisor, “she’s out to lunch but will call us back”. No response.

This went on for five months. We have always been very pleasant to the young lady that answers the phone and would be pleasant to anyone else in their company if they would be at their phones, not out to lunch, gone home for the day, working from home that day, sick kids, death in the family, or a myriad of other excuses we get for anyone else not in attendance at this company. We have attempted to work our way up the chain of command to resolve our payment problem No One Is Ever In.

This is the fourth such company in six years of business we have worked for doing this type of third party work. None have come through with payment.

Do not accept work from Prism Point Technologies, they will not pay you.

From this post you can see that Gateway didn’t care. So thats Dell and Gateway that will not get myself or my clients money any more. Gateway was already on my do not recommend list due to their horrible build quality.

This should be illegal.

Google Apps for your Business

Google Docs was introduced by Google a few years ago.  At that time (like everything else google does) I signed up for Google Docs.  While primitive compared to Microsoft Office, it served its purpose really well for me.  The sharing capabilities with individuals over the internet.   It’s downsides were definitely numerous.  No offline mode, limited abilities with charts, graphics, etc.  Thankfully these shortcomings continue to improve.

While I still give first place to Microsoft Office, I feel that competitors like google docs and open office (which is what I also use) are just as good for most people.  Unless you are doing some intensive calculations competitors to Excel work just fine.  Why spend hundreds of dollars when the products are free?

Now, Google Apps is both pay and free for businesses.  In fact, it’s quite difficult to find the free version now but it is still there.

What do I use Google Apps the most for?  Actually, the sharing capabilities are still huge to me.  I just added gmail for my business as well.  It was a painless process but now admin@pc-prime.com actually flows through google.

Advantages:

  • You get the same server storage space as your personal gmail account (7 gigs and growing)
  • Access anywhere with an internet connection
  • IMAP capabilities for syncing
  • SPAM filtering is great
  • You still get to use your business URL (@pc-prime.com)
  • You can even setup BES to work with Google Apps.

The pay version offers a bunch of things like the BES portion, more space and a few other items.  It costs $50 per person per year.  Compared to an exchange server that runs you thousands, it is definitely worth it.

So what does exchange offer that Google Apps doesn’t?  Well, from what I have been researching, it would be the flagging of messages for followup with specific times.  Now, this IS possible in the gmail screen but it is not available through Outlook if you are checking your gmail account through it.  Everything else syncs from your calendar to your contacts.

In fact, I sync all three, outlook, google apps and my blackberry. (I’m on BIS)

It’s free and it’s efficient so try out Google Apps!

Create a Bootable USB Drive for Windows 7

These directions were posted by “Arnie” in the comments saction of www.withinwindows.com

They work great! Especially since the Microsoft Tool was pulled and didn’t work for me anyways.

An other way to create a bootable USB drive to install W7 from is:
Format the drive from a Vista/W7 machine:
CMD
FORMAT F: /FS:NTFS (where F: is of course your USB drive)

Activate the first partition on that drive:
Start DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK x (where x is the drivenumber shown from the previous command)
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
EXIT

Mount your newly downloaded ISO from Microsoft with Daemon tools or other mount-tool
Place a W7 bootsector on the drive:
Z: (where Z: is your cdrom drive where the ISO is mounted)
CD \BOOT
BOOTSECT /NT60 F:

Now copy all of the files of the mounted cdrom to the USB drive
XCOPY Z:\ F:\ /S/E

Now boot from the USB drive to install W7!

Google Wave – very interesting

I finally got my Google Wave invite 2 days ago.  I must say, I do a pretty good job of getting in my invites for Google products.  Never the first group but still a select few.

There really isn’t much to say right now. To start with I began watching their video of a conference that introduces Wave.  I admit I didn’t finish it.  1.5 hours is a little too long.  I will have to play with it but the biggest problem I see is I can’t really use it unless the people I need to use it with are invited.  Kind of a bummer right now.  I will have to try and get my wife an invite so we can colloborate with our small businesses.

For those that are more curious as to what it is just go to Google Wave.
